Wk 13 — Essay 2 — Art!

At the beginning of the semester whenever I thought of art, I thought it was whatever I looked at, heard, felt, tasted, smelled, and really enjoyed. At the beginning of the semester, I thought art was whatever I found beautiful.

My idea of art hasn’t changed at all, I think things like art cannot have a universal definition that applies to all people, art is subjective so an individual must decide what art is to them.

To me now art is what I just described.

My major is General Biology and my career goals have to do with entering the field of either genetics or ecology. Art, aesthetics, and design can contribute to my career because the two fields of genetics and ecology can be complex in their own way, and aesthetics and design can help to make complex things more clear.

Taking this class didn’t help me learn to draw or anything but I do want to learn how to draw, that would be a fun hobby that could become very fun in the future. I don’t know what “being a more complete human being” is supposed to mean but to me, more fun equals a better life.

Art is important, without art, artists, and the artistic impulse the world would be extremely boring and that boredom would only give rise to artists and the artistic impulse to cure that boredom.

I don’t know if a great nation “deserves great art” but a great nation could certainly give rise to great art. A terrible nation could also give rise to great art and vice versa.

What I’ve learned this semester is that an art class at CSULB isn’t necessarily a class where all assignments are sketches and paintings. Going forward art will either be something that can add even more fun to my life, a way to explain things that would otherwise be unexplainable to some, or nothing.
